Why a readymade grille or railing doesn't always fit

Hardware shops and online sellers stock grilles and railings in a handful of standard widths, built for a standard window or balcony opening. A lot of Navi Mumbai flats, especially older buildings and resale units, were never built to one standard size. Window openings vary by a few centimetres from flat to flat even within the same building, and a balcony railing run often has to work around a support column, a drainage outlet, or an odd angle where two walls meet.

The mismatch usually shows up at installation, not at the shop counter. A grille that measures correctly on paper needs packing, extra brackets, or a visible gap filled with sealant to actually sit in the opening. None of that is dangerous by itself, but it looks exactly like what it is: a standard piece forced into a non-standard space.

When a readymade grille or railing is genuinely the right call

We will say this plainly: custom is not automatically the better answer. If a window opening is a completely standard size with no obstruction nearby, a readymade grille in the right dimensions does the job just as well, usually for less money and with no waiting on fabrication. It also makes sense for a rental flat you don't plan to stay in long, or a quick safety fix, such as a single window grille needed before a small child starts climbing on the sill.

A readymade piece is also a reasonable stopgap if you need something installed this week rather than in a few weeks. There is no reason to pay more or wait longer just because custom sounds like the premium choice. For a genuinely standard opening, it usually is not.

When custom fabrication is worth the extra time

Custom earns its cost once the opening stops being standard. A balcony that turns a corner, a window set into an angled bay, or a gate that has to clear a sloped driveway without dragging are exactly the shapes a factory-run readymade piece was never designed to handle. A custom-fabricated piece is measured and built to that exact opening, so it sits flush without packing or a visible gap.

It also matters when you want every metal element on the property to read as one finish rather than a set of separate purchases. Matching a new balcony railing to an existing gate, or a window grille to a pattern already used elsewhere on the building, is something a stock catalogue item cannot promise, because it was never designed with your building in mind.

This comes up often on gates and compound entrances, where the opening width is fixed by the existing pillars and a readymade gate either leaves a gap or does not clear the ground when it swings. A custom gate, fabricated to the exact pillar-to-pillar measurement and ground clearance, avoids both problems from the start.

MS or SS, powder-coated or painted: the decisions that come with custom

Custom fabrication also means choosing the material and finish deliberately instead of accepting whatever a stock piece was made from. Mild steel (MS) costs less and takes a painted or powder-coated finish well, which is the more common choice for window grilles and standard railings. Stainless steel (SS) costs more but resists rust without repainting, which matters more for a balcony railing or gate exposed directly to Navi Mumbai's coastal humidity through the monsoon.

Powder coating generally holds up longer than ordinary paint on an exposed railing or gate, since it bonds to the metal rather than sitting on top of it, though a painted finish is quicker to touch up if it gets scratched. What actually happens differently on site

The real difference between the two options is not really the finished piece, it is what happens when the opening and the measurement disagree. With a readymade purchase, that mismatch is yours to solve afterwards, usually with packing, an exchange, or a separate fabricator called in to adjust it. With a custom job, the same team that measured the opening is the one building the piece, so an unexpected obstruction, a drainage pipe, an uneven sill, a column that was not on the original plan, gets designed around before any metal is cut.

That is also where working with an in-house studio matters more than it sounds. A fabricator working from someone else's measurement has to absorb any small error on installation day. When the same team measures, fabricates and fits, there is one point of accountability for the fit, not two parties pointing at each other's numbers. The honest cost trade-off, without a number attached

We are not going to give you a flat figure here, because a single standard window grille and a custom gate fabricated around an odd pillar spacing are not the same job, and quoting one number would mislead you about the other.
